Reflecting on my Communication as a Leader

My current communication style as a leader revolves around helping others. I am almost always available to help with clarification or guidance when someone else I’m working with requires assistance, because I truly believe being “on call” creates an environment where nobody ever feels as if there isn’t someone to respond when they need to reach out for something. Other than that, I tend to communicate using as straightforward means as possible so it’s easy for the people on the receiving end to understand what I’m trying to say and what the purpose of the message is.

As a leader, something that has proven to be a strength in my communication skills is persuasion. I am often able to clearly convey my perspective on a given situation or topic and help others better understand it, making it easier for them to ultimately agree or contribute to it positively. This is a trait I will continue to use to my advantage, especially in leadership scenarios, as it is crucial for getting other people on board with your ideas until they are eventually implemented.

One aspect of my leadership style that I will work on to stop doing is closing up my own communication channels in certain situations, especially when I feel as if I need help or shouldn’t contribute to a conversation where the other people talking are more experienced and knowledgeable than me. Altering my mindset and changing this will allow me to communicate with others more actively when I am leading a project.

Something I will start doing as a leader is becoming more proactive in my communication. Whether it be with teammates or managers, I think taking the first step to reach out to others is critical to having an open line of thoughts, ideas, and feedback that are all helpful in helping progress toward our goals.
